Seian Maru

(Depth 17m - 27m)

The Seian Maru is a large Japanese cargo vessel of approx 30,000 tons. It was sunk by the American Navy on their return to the Philippines in 1945. The ship is 113 metres long and lies on her port side in 26m of water, the upper parts are at 17 metres. The wreck is situated just 130 metres from the USS New York, in the main harbour.

In addition to the damage sustained when she was bombed and sunk in 1945, there is further blast damage caused in 1967 during US Naval training exercises.

The wreck however is still largely intact. Access to all of the holds is open and easy with large swim throughs. The deck and superstructure have largely collapsed with little access possible. One anchor is still in place and the ships name can be faintly seen. For more serious penetration, access can be gained through the aft hold, along by the propshaft tunnel and on to the engine room bulkhead.

The wreck is covered with good fish life, including many large lionfish, scorpion fish, jacks, spotted sweetlips, and coral trout among other species.

This wreck is best dived on 36% Nitrox for extended bottom times.
